Hypocrite comes from the Greek word meaning 'acting'. So a hypocrite is a person who tells you to do one thing but does the opposite of what they tell you to do. You put standards on other people that you yourself do not follow. For example, if someone (Ms. Wear-Your-Seatbelt) told you to wear a seatbelt when you drive and was very upset when you did not, but that person never wore a seatbelt, then Ms. Wear-Your-Seatbelt would be a hypocrite. In the Bible, one of the reasons Jesus was angry with the Pharisees was because of their hypocrisy - "They tie up heavy loads and put them on men's shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to lift a finger to move them". (Matthew 23:4) So hypocrite is actually a more specific term than some people seem to realize and it's actually a bit different from lying or not giving information. Sorry, lol, I'm just a stickler for words, lol.  You can now go back to your regularly scheduled lives. |
